Miami hotel occupancy improved slightly last week. Next week’s numbers should be better.
Hotel occupancy in Miami-Dade County rose to 32.8% for the week ending May 30 — a slight improvement from the 29.3% occupancy in the week prior, according to travel data group STR, but still a dramatic drop of almost 54% from the same week in 2019.
Average daily rate also improved week to week, from $80.50 to $83.75 — still a far cry from the same week in 2019.
At the time, Miami-Dade hotels were still open only to essential lodgers. Hotels were permitted to reopen to visitors as of June 1, which should boost numbers, at least slightly.
Most areas of Florida reopened to visitors in early May. The numbers statewide improved, with hotel occupancy growing to 39.5%.
Even with the reopening measure, county hotels continue to see layoffs: The Loews in Miami Beach announced the temporary or permanent layoff of more than 700 workers this week, while the Delano announced nearly 200 layoffs.
