Florida attorney general investigating Norwegian Cruise Line’s coronavirus sales pitch
A “Consumer Protection” investigation from Florida attorney general Ashley Moody’s office is looking into misleading statements from Norwegian Cruise Line to potential customers about the coronavirus.
“We are in the thick of a public health crisis like our modern world has never experienced,” Moody said in a statement. “My Consumer Protection Division is conducting an extensive investigation to get to the bottom of the disturbing allegations against Norwegian Cruise Lines.
“Let this serve as a warning to anyone seeking to mislead consumers during these challenging times. I will do everything within the power of this office to hold accountable those who would prey on Floridians during this health crisis.”
Moody’s office says Norwegian is cooperating fully with the investigation.
Leaked emails with management-suggested lies to help employees close sales as COVID-19’s harmed cruise bookings were first reported by Miami New Times on March 11 and confirmed by the Miami Herald on March 12.
After NCL’s stock lost over half its value on those two days of trading, an investor sued the cruise line.
Employees say NCL managers directed them to downplay the threat of COVID-19 with lines such as “the only thing you need to worry about for your cruise is do you have enough sunscreen,” and “the coronavirus can only survive in cold temperatures, so the Caribbean is a fantastic choice for your next cruise.”
Moody’s office said, “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization and countless health experts, these statements are blatantly false.”
