Frontier Airlines will start MIA hub in 2020 with 8 more flights and Miami-based crews
Frontier Airlines is making Miami International Airport one of its hubs in 2020.
The low-fare airline announced Wednesday that it is adding eight direct flights from MIA and will base more than 100 flight attendants and 30 pilots in Miami starting in March.
Frontier has similar hubs in Denver, Chicago, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Orlando. The airline began flying out of MIA in 2014, and this 2020 expansion brings Frontier to 22 direct routes from Miami. The company also flies from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Palm Beach International Airport.
“Our newest crew base in Miami highlights our commitment to delivering low fares and convenient air travel in South Florida,” Barry Biffle, CEO of Frontier Airlines, said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to serve the community from the convenience of their hometown airport.”
Starting on April 23, 2020, Frontier will fly daily to Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport, Ontario International Airport in California, and Santo Domingo Airport. The company will have flights to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and Trenton-Mercer Airport in New Jersey on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
Starting on May 10, 2020, Frontier will fly to Long Island MacArthur Airport daily. From May 10, 2020, to June 18, 2020, Frontier will fly daily to Guatemala City La Aurora International Airport, and then service will be reduced to Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays going forward.
Starting on June 18, 2020, Frontier will fly to El Salvador International Airport on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The flights to San Salvador and Guatemala City mark the company’s first to Central America.
Frontier is the only airline with direct flights from MIA to Trenton, New Jersey; Ontario, California; and Long Island, New York. To inaugurate the eight additional routes, the company is offering fares starting at $39 on Dec. 22, 2019, for select days.
Denver-based Frontier Airlines is owned by Indigo Partners, a private equity firm that owns or has a majority stake in other low-cost airlines JetSMART in Chile, Volaris in Mexico and Wizz Air in Hungary. Frontier is an all-Airbus airline, and Indigo dominates Airbus A320 plane orders for the next decade, insulating the company from the crisis at competitor Boeing Co., which announced Monday it would halt production of its 737 Max plane.
