Coming soon: a movie about the world’s richest man, with an ultra-luxury Coral Gables home as the backdrop.

“ELON: The Tesla Story,” which chronicles the early days of the electric vehicle company under CEO Elon Musk, was filmed at a waterfront mansion at 600-620 Arvida Parkway in the exclusive Gables Estates neighborhood.

The film, produced by Armando Gutierrez, is coinciding with a moment of fascination with the eccentric, and often controversial, South African-born entrepreneur.

Musk became the world’s first trillionaire earlier in June when he took his space technology and telecommunications company SpaceX public. His net worth has since fallen to an estimated $941 billion.

The home, owned by attorney and University of Miami booster John Ruiz, was listed in February for $175 million.

If it sells for that price, it could become the most expensive home ever sold in Miami-Dade County. The record was recently set at $170 million by Mark Zuckerberg, who bought a partially completed Indian Creek Village mansion earlier this year.

Gutierrez, who will also star as Musk in the movie, seems to have found a niche in mid-budget films about billionaires. He previously produced and starred in “Bezos: The Beginning,” released in 2023.

Though the Musk movie was shot in Florida, the story takes place in California, where he was living during Tesla’s early days. Musk now lives in Texas, home to several of his companies.

Nick Friedman, a Tampa-based entrepreneur who co-founded College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving, is one of the film’s producers. He said the movie is set to have a limited theatrical release this fall. After that, they hope to sell the movie to a streaming platform, a common path for mid-budget movies, said Friedman.

Friedman said shooting at Ruiz’s Gables Estates home was “incredible” and “leveled up the quality of the movie.”

The 10-bedroom, 21,145-square-foot mansion, which was listed by Alex Pirez of Mocca Realty, features a speakeasy lounge, gym and spa, eight-car garage and 335 feet of waterfront access. Other homeowners in the ritzy neighborhood include the singer The Weeknd and music producer Pharrell Williams.

Listing a home for $175 million doesn’t guarantee it will sell for that price. But even if the home doesn’t get the asking price, it will likely go for significantly more than Ruiz paid for it. He bought the home for $46 million in 2020. Since then, prices for waterfront estates in Miami-Dade have skyrocketed as the area has attracted a crop of billionaire buyers including Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

Earlier this year, rumors were circulating that Musk was touring a home in Miami Beach. The North Bay Road compound he was rumored to be checking out is still under construction and is expected to fetch a price tag of around $300 million once completed. That would make it the most expensive home sold in Miami-Dade.
