A store without any cashiers? Can flying cars be next?
Self-checkout machines have been available at CVS, Target and Home Depot for years. Now Walmart has opened a store without any cashiers at all — and it’s on Coral Way.
The new format is designed to improve the shopping experience and speed checkouts. The West Miami-Dade store will have the same number of workers, about 100, as a traditional neighborhood market. But instead of swipers and baggers, the checkout lane will feature roving employees assisting shoppers when they need it.
The Coral Way Grand Opening is part of Walmart’s ongoing investment in store openings, remodeling and innovation. In 2019 alone, Walmart committed $173 million to upgrading its existing stores, among other improvements, across the state.
Other store features:
- Free Online Grocery Pickup: Customers will be able to order Walmart groceries online and pick them up curbside. Customers can select from up to 40,000 grocery items at Walmart.com or in the Walmart mobile app, and choose the best time to pick their items up. A Walmart personal shopper loads the groceries into the customer’s vehicle upon arrival — all at no additional cost.
- Grocery Delivery: Local customers will have access to grocery delivery from the Coral Way store starting in late January. Trained personal shoppers — all Walmart employees — will select from tens of thousands of grocery items and deliver direct to customers’ doorsteps. Groceries can be ordered at Walmart.com/grocery or on the Walmart mobile app and delivered as soon as the same day. Orders require a $30 minimum — with no subscription needed.
Check Out With Me: Shoppers on-the-go can complete their purchase directly with a Walmart associate. Associates will be outfitted with cellular devices and Bluetooth printers that can produce a receipt — via print, text or email — on the spot.
The store is at 14720 SW 26th St., and will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
Don’t worry; the greeters — now called “hosts” — are still human.
