Some retirees hit by freeze on Social Security payments

Many of South Florida’s retirees face tighter finances next year with no increase in Social Security payments.

The Social Security Administration announced Thursday that monthly payments will not increase for the almost 65 million Americans who receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income. By law, officials said, they cannot raise the monthly benefits because consumer costs nationally are down, largely because of falling gas prices.
