Publix open on Easter Sunday? Miami malls closed? Get rundown on shopping hours
Publix stores closing on Easter Sunday is one tradition remaining from founder George Jenkins’ plans after he opened the first one in Florida’s Winter Haven in 1930.
In fact, Publix was closed on Sundays, period, until April 24, 1983. That’s when Jenkins, then 75, listened to market pressure — nearly all of the grocery chain’s competition had Sunday hours. Publix flung open its doors at 9 a.m. that Sunday and has kept open on Sundays since.
But not on Easter Sunday.
Government offices and many public services also don’t operate on Sunday. But on this Easter Sunday, April 5, are other South Florida stores and malls open for business?
Here’s a look at what’s open and what’s closed Easter Sunday, April 5:
Supermarkets
- Publix: Closed.
- Walmart/Sam’s Club: Walmart stores will be open regular hours; Sam’s Club closed.
- Costco: Closed.
- Target: Closed.
- Winn-Dixie: Open regular hours.
- Aldi: Closed.
- Milam’s Markets: Open regular hours.
- Sedano’s Supermarket: Open.
- Presidente Supermarket: Open.
- Price Choice Supermarket: Open; but some locations may close at 2 p.m.
- BJ’s Warehouse Club: Open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- The Fresh Market: Open regular hours.
- Whole Foods Market: Most stores in South Florida open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but several will close at 6 p.m., including the Pinecrest area location at 7930 SW 104th St.
- Trader Joe’s: Open.
- Sprouts Farmers Market: Open.
Shopping malls
Here are the malls that are open or closed on Easter:
- Aventura Mall: Open 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
- Bayside Marketplace: Open 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
- Brickell City Centre: Shops are closed, but the CMX movie theater and restaurants are open.
- Broward Mall: Closed.
- Coral Square Mall: Closed.
- Dadeland Mall: Closed.
- Dolphin Mall: Open 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
- The Falls: Closed.
- Miami International Mall: Closed.
- Palms at Town & Country: Open.
- Sawgrass Mills: Open 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
- Southland Mall: Closed.
- Westland Mall: Closed.
Pharmacies
Pharmacies are generally open on Easter but check with yours to see if hours are reduced.
- CVS: Open.
- Walgreens: Open.
