This supermarket is opening a second Aventura store. See how it’s different

The Fresh Market is opening a second Aventura grocery store just a mile from its longstanding location.

The move may be familiar to Publix shoppers, who have a choice between nearby supermarket locations, sometimes even across the street from each other. Aventura spans less than four miles in length, and also is home to two Publix supermarkets.

The Northeast Miami-Dade city, lined with condos, restaurants and stores, is choked daily with traffic along U.S. 1, with cars heading to the big mall or west to I-95. So, having two locations of any store can help save time for gridlocked shoppers.

Here’s what to know about The Fresh Market expansion:

How the two locations differ

A Fresh Market executive says there’s a good reason to consider the new 33,701-square-foot store, the 53rd in Florida, that’s opening at 8 a.m. Feb. 18 at Aventura Square at 19205 Biscayne Blvd.

It’s bigger — and that means more offerings.

“There are a few differences between our Aventura Square location and our original Town Plaza store,” said Carlos Laurel, Fresh Market’s regional director of operations in an email interview with the Miami Herald.

“Aventura Square features the Roasting Plant, where guests can buy freshly roasted beans made to order. We also have an expanded Center Store concept, which includes a cafe, made-to-order sandwiches, sushi, pizza, and a variety of meats our team smokes in-house,” he said.

Both locations will have a selection of kosher products, but the new Aventura Square location will have an expanded kosher section, Laurel said.

There are also expanded indoor and outdoor seating areas at the new store, versus the original at the Town Plaza shopping center, which opened with 19,600 square feet in 2003. There are no plans to close the older store in Aventura, according to the company.

Expanding into Florida

At the time, the Greensboro, North Carolina-based grocery chain was in the midst of expanding into Florida. In 2003, Fresh Market had South Florida stores in Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, and several others around the state. At the 2003 Aventura grand opening, the gourmet grocery offered free tastes and a rose for shoppers.

About a decade later, in August 2012, The Fresh Market opened its 30th store in Florida at The Falls shopping mall in the Kendall area. That store is about 22,500 square feet and fronts 136th Street on U.S.1.

Another new Fresh Market, the eighth in the Miami area and 52nd in the state, opened in January 2026 at 5850 SW 73rd St. in South Miami.

There are currently 172 stores in the U.S. with the vast majority hugging the East Coast in states including the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois, Alabama and Indiana. About 30% of them, more than any other state, are in Florida, according to Scrape Hero.

In addition to the February Aventura opening, the chain eyes opening up to 10 more stores around the country in 2026.
