Winn-Dixie rebrands with a Florida focus. What does this mean for your Miami store?

Florida focus. A partnership with Amazon. Expansion and remodeling of stores.

Is this the same Winn-Dixie that, a year-ago, seemed ready to be absorbed by Aldi?

In its 100th year, Winn-Dixie is alive, but changing. Besides a corporate rebrand from Southeastern Grocers to The Winn Dixie Company, as well as other changes, dozens of stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi will close by the end of 2025. Southern Georgia will keep several Winn-Dixie stores.

Florida, where Lakeland-based Publix is the dominant supermarket, is the place the refocused chain hopes to build its future.

Expansion in its home state began with the acquisition of three Hitchcock’s Markets in Alachua, Keystone Heights and Williston. These branches will reopen as Winn-Dixie stores beginning late 2025.

Winn-Dixie plans in South Florida

“While the first wave of new stores and remodels is concentrated in North Florida, South Florida remains an essential part of our long-term growth plan,” Meredith Hurley, the chain’s senior director of communications and community, said in an email to the Miami Herald.

“We will continue reinvesting in existing stores across the state, focusing on design refreshes, product innovation and digital convenience,” she said.

After these moves, The Winn-Dixie Company will operate about 130 grocery stores and 140 freestanding or grocery-adjacent liquor stores to concentrate its business in Florida and southern Georgia —“where our roots, customer relationships and opportunities for growth are strongest,” Hurley said.

“As Winn-Dixie steps into its next century, our priority is creating a better, more connected grocery experience for the communities that have supported us for generations,” she said.

What can customers expect at Winn-Dixie?

Along with proposed store remodels, new openings and community-centered upgrades — “modern, inviting stores that reflect what our customers want most” — customers can expect to see:

  • An expansion of Winn-Dixie’s liquor store portfolio.
  • More in-house Own Brand offerings.
  • Pilot projects including third-party online grocery delivery through Amazon Delivery and self-service Amazon Return Kiosks at 20 Winn-Dixie stores in Jacksonville and Orlando.

Amazon’s arrival

The business-partnership resembles services at the Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market. Kohl’s, Staples and The UPS Store also have staffed or self-serve Amazon kiosks at many of their stores.

The kiosks allow customers to return eligible Amazon items during their grocery runs — no box or label required. Bags and labels are provided at the kiosks.

“Building on a successful pilot in Jacksonville, we will have more details to share soon about expanding Amazon Return Kiosks for Miami-area customers,” Winn-Dixie’s Hurley said.

Customers can shop for groceries from Winn-Dixie on Amazon at amazon.com/winndixie or using the Amazon shopping app. About 16,000 items across multiple grocery categories are available, according to Amazon.

Prime members and customers without a Prime membership can get free delivery on all Winn-Dixie orders over $25 with two-hour delivery windows. Winn-Dixie members can link their Winn-Dixie Rewards account with their Amazon account to earn one point for every $2 spent on Winn-Dixie Amazon orders. The points can be redeemed when shopping in store at Winn-Dixie.

Amazon and Winn-Dixie didn’t announce how long the limited time promo will run in Jacksonville and Orlando.

“We’re always looking for ways to make grocery shopping easier, more convenient and meet evolving customer needs,” said Sophie Turrell, director of U.S. Grocery Partnerships at Amazon, which doesn’t have an ownership stake in Winn-Dixie.

“By bringing Winn-Dixie’s selection to Amazon, we’re giving customers ... more choice and flexibility in how they shop for groceries, all with the convenience of Amazon delivery,” she said.

A milestone for Winn-Dixie

Winn-Dixie touts the 100-year mark as an opportunity to refresh.

“For a century, Winn-Dixie has proudly called Florida home. Our story is built on the resilience and spirit of its people, and that foundation will guide our future,” said Anthony Hucker, chairman and CEO of Southeastern Grocers in the company’s announcement that listed 42 stores set for closing.

The list marks many as pending, awaiting new owners, including nine Winn-Dixie stores in New Orleans. A Tallahassee store in Florida’s Gadsden County will become a Piggly Wiggly Food for Less, according to the list.

The moves will mean a different footprint for the company, both locally and nationally.

Winn-Dixie did not disclose a full store list, but Aldi, a separate company, is planning to convert about 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations by 2027.

One of those Aldi conversions is a now-closed Winn-Dixie store at 8710 SW 72nd St., in Miami’s Kendall neighborhood in the Sunset West shopping center, Hurley confirmed. That Winn-Dixie closed in 2022 for repairs and a year later opened a remodeled store in July 2023. Aldi’s sign is already up on the Sunset West street sign.

“All associates received advance notice, and Southeastern Grocers worked diligently with Aldi to provide support and available opportunities to each associate, including having the first opportunity to apply to roles at the newly converted Aldi store or the opportunity to continue working with Winn-Dixie at another location,” she said.

Another popular Winn-Dixie, a store with a kosher deli and other products, also has been converted to an Aldi. Despite discussion in the community of a Winn-Dixie off Stirling Road in Hollywood possibly closing to make way for a kosher market, that store remains open.

“At this time, our Hollywood Winn-Dixie ... will continue normal business operations,” Hurley said.

Further closings and conversions will be shared first with employees of the affected stores, she said.

“This transformation is about honoring our century-old legacy while evolving to meet the needs of today’s customers. We’re proud to grow where our story began — right here in Florida — and to continue delivering the quality, service and value that has defined Winn-Dixie for generations.”
