Gas prices are on the rise again in Florida. See the cheapest places to pump

After a big decrease last week, Florida gas prices are up this week.

Prices have increased about 5 cents a gallon in the state and 8 cents in South Florida, and most areas are averaging less than $3 a gallon.

Even with the increase, prices in the Miami area are down about 6 cents from a month ago and 7 cents from a year ago, according to GasBuddy, a national fuel monitoring service that surveys nearly 1,700 stations in South Florida.

Why the yo-yo price trends from week to week?

“Since the fuel market has been stable, retailers are constantly adjusting prices to attract customers,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group. “But once those prices fall below a profitable margin, stations raise them again, and the cycle repeats.”

North Florida remains the cheapest to get gas in the state. Naples and Palm Beach County are among the most expensive areas.

What the experts are saying

▪ Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy: “While the national average slipped slightly over the last week, it’s once again been a mixed bag depending on where you fill up. Gas prices cycled upward in Ohio and Michigan, declined in Indiana and Delaware, and pain is about to return to California and neighboring states following last week’s refinery fire outside Los Angeles. While OPEC again agreed over the weekend to boost oil production for November, the real story for motorists has been regional variation — especially in areas served by California’s supply system. Though the damage from the fire appears limited, the West Coast is likely to see prices climb, while most other areas can expect relative stability or slight declines.”

How to find cheap gas near you

There’s an app to help: The GasBuddy app was built to show motorists prices around them and a fuel tracker can update users on stations that have or don’t have fuel based on supply changes.
