Gas prices soar by double digits in Florida. See the cheapest places to pump

After a big dip last week, gas prices have increased in Florida by double digits this week. The change has sent most areas over $3 a gallon.

Prices in the Miami area are nearly 15 cents a gallon higher than a month ago, according to GasBuddy, a national fuel monitoring service that surveys nearly 1,700 stations in South Florida.

The increase “may sound steep, but these kinds of fluctuations have become fairly routine over the past year,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA - The Auto Club Group.

Since September 2024, Florida’s average gas price has been like a yo-yo on a string, up and down, down and up.

“The fuel market itself remains relatively stable,” Jenkins said. “Retailers frequently adjust pump prices to stay competitive. Once prices dip below a profitable threshold, stations raise them again, and the cycle starts over.”

North Florida remains the cheapest to get gas in the state. Naples and Palm Beach County are among the most expensive areas.

What the experts are saying

▪ Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy: “The national average saw a slight increase last week, primarily driven by states that experienced price cycling just ahead of the switch back to winter gasoline. Florida, Ohio, Michigan, and Maryland — all states known for routine price cycling — saw double-digit jumps to average gas prices. Now that much of the nation has begun the transition to cheaper winter gasoline and with driving demand seasonally tapering off as temperatures dip, gas prices face additional downward pressure. We’re still on track to potentially see the national average fall below $3 per gallon for the first time in years this autumn.”
