What will the tweens do? Claire’s closing some stores in South Florida. See list

Claire’s, a mall boutique chain that began life as a Chicago wig store more than 60 years ago before it became a fashion favorite of tweens, teens and young women looking for accessories and jewelry, is set to close more than 290 stores.

That’s just under 10% of its 2,300 stores in North America, which includes its Icing stores.

Blame the bankruptcy process.

In August, CEO Chris Cramer said in a statement that tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump (many of Claire’s trinkets are made in China), inflation, shifting consumer trends and online competition, were some of the contributing factors, NPR reported.

Claire’s Holdings LLC, announced on Aug. 20 that it had sold its North American business to private equity firm Ames Watson for $104 million. The closings — which include a dozen in Florida, including Miami’s River Landing location, Cutler Bay and Hollywood — listed Claire’s store closings in a court filing on Aug. 25, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

Claire’s did not list closing dates for any of the stores.

The filing listed about 800 Claire’s that are expected to remain open for now, which include South Florida stores at Aventura, Dadeland, The Falls, Kendall Village Center, Dolphin, Westland and Coral Ridge malls.
