How to find deals, discounts and events during Black Business Month in Miami

August is national Black Business Month. And while it’s not as well-known as Amazon Prime Day or Small Business Saturday, the recognition is important for business owners and their customers.

Black Business Month was founded in 2004 by entrepreneurs Frederick E. Jordan and John William Templeton to raise awareness about entrepreneurship and its challenges.

In recognition of Black Business Month, some South Florida Black-owned companies are offering discounts, promotions and even networking opportunities.

Not familiar with the monthlong focus on Black businesses? It’s not too late to reap the benefits.

“I wouldn’t have known either if I wasn’t in business,” North Miami entrepreneur Karty Pierre, owner of Candle By Kay, said about the monthlong focus. “I’m embracing it by going to events and panel discussions.”

And those discussions continue on Friday, Aug. 23, when North Miami hosts a free small business expo at the Joe Celestin Community Center, 1525 NW 135th St. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., business people can network and learn from panel discussions.

If you’re looking for deals or other networking opportunities, check out these five highlights:

Lil’ Greenhouse Grill

At Overtown’s Lil’ Greenhouse Grill, guests can enjoy soul food like collard greens and smoked ribs. Owners Nicole Gates and Karim Bryant launched a monthly networking event on Aug. 1 that features live music and opportunities for other business owners to pitch their businesses.

“We kicked off Black Business Month with a mixer,” Gates said. “We want to provide live music, networking and a chance to pitch their business and support the economic growth of businesses in Overtown.”

Candles by Kay owner Karty Pierre is based in North Miami and sells her fragrant candles at pop-up shops, farmer’s markets and via her mobile installations. For Black Business Month, she is promoting her candle-making workshop at a discounted $25 a person.

“I’m online and I’m currently doing the workshops mobile,” she said. “I tell people if they can’t secure a location, I’ll meet them, all the products in hand.”

Glow Skin Corrective & Glow Esthetic Skin Studio

Hollywood entrepreneur Lisset Tresvant is the owner of Glow Skin Corrective and Glow Esthetic Skin Studio. As a former makeup artist, Tresvant informs clients about how health and wellness can lead to clear, strong skin.

“Your face is the first thing you see in the morning,” she said in a recent Instagram post. “Confidence starts with how you feel about the person looking back at you. And that begins with self-care.”

For Black Business Month, Tresvant is offering $25 off of her Glo2 treatment.

1804 Haitian Pizza

Haitian food is tropical, sometimes spicy, and simply delicious. With two locations in North Miami, 1804 Haitian Pizza combines Haitian griot and oxtail with pizza in a popular way.

Owner Ludvy Joseph sees Black businesses as a way to continue circulating the Black dollar in our communities.

“It’s about bringing value and the dollar circulating in the community,” Joseph said. “We’re all going to spend and might as well keep [money] in the Black community. It’s really important for Black entrepreneurs in the community.”
