Inspectors spot roaches and shut down a Broward kosher bakery’s kitchen

A state inspector took the “entire kitchen/food prep area” of a Dania Beach kosher bakery out of action after cataloging the roaches and some of the flies.

That’s the Stop Use Order dropped on Panino Kosher Hollywood from Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services inspector Novelette Williams. Williams’ once over of the former Breads & Co., 5978 SW 40th Ave., posted to the agency’s website Monday, although the inspection says she visited on April 2.

As inspections go, this one was short, consisting of one overarching violation — “observed live roaches present while food is being prepared and stored in the following areas...”

Five were seen “crawling under the food prep table where hamburger buns and sandwich breads are being stored in red and white thank you plastic bags” next to the ovens. Four 20-pound bags of hamburger buns and sandwich breads got hit with Stop Sales, sending 80 pounds of bread into the garbage.

Three were “crawling on the wall behind the prep table next to handwash sink, where cooked rice is being stored.”

Six roaches crawled on the floor the three-compartment sink.

One roach was “crawling on the shelf under the main prep table located in front of the oven where bread crumbs and tortilla are being stored.”

Another one was “crawling on a prep table where a pot with soup is being hot held.”

One was on the floor in front of a dining room reach-in cooler with bottled water and canned sodas.

One was on the wall next to a three-compartment sink faucet.

Three live roaches were on the floor and on a box with Chef’s Quality Soybean Oil.

In addition, there were “five live flies flying around and landing on the prep table, packaged foods and equipment in the prep area.”
