Joann is closing all Miami and Broward locations. Will any Florida stores remain open?
Joann, the place to buy fabric and quilting supplies, will disappear.
At first, the company announced it would close half of its stores, including all locations in South Florida. A few days later, the company said it would close all 800 of its stores across the country.
That means the stores in Florida that survived the initial cut, will close as well.
The company was sold and liquidation sales will continue for the next few weeks, according to Joann.
“We are committed to working constructively with the winning bidder to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the impact on all our stakeholders,” the company said in a statement.
Joann has been hard hit by competitors including Michaels and Hobby Lobby, according to an NPR report.
Joann has been around for more than 80 years and has been part of the South Florida retail landscape for decades, including a long-time Kendall storefront near Dadeland Mall.
The company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January for the second time since initially filing and going private in March 2024.
Joann’s Florida shutdowns
Among the Joann locations on the to-close list: stores on North Kendall Drive in the Greenery Mall, Flagler Street at Flagler Park Plaza, and Cutler Bay’s Caribbean Boulevard in Miami-Dade. In Broward, locations on Hollywood Boulevard, South Federal Highway in Pompano Beach and the Margate store are also on the closing list.
Stores in Pembroke Pines, Boynton Beach, Wellington and West Palm Beach are also on the list.
Florida locations including Fort Myers, Tallahassee, Destin, Pensacola and Gainesville — originally on the survivor list to stay open — will shut down as well with the late February announcement.
The Ohio-based Joann, in a webpage devoted to the restructuring, didn’t announce a closing date. Gift cards are accepted through Feb. 28.
“Stores are open. joann.com is shipping orders and team members are receiving pay and benefits,” the company posted. “Joann is committed to providing our customers — the sewists, quilters, crocheters, crafters and other creative enthusiasts we have served for more than 80 years — with great service and assortments and to supporting our thousands of team members across the nation throughout this process.”
