What happened to Big Lots? Here are the stores in Miami and Broward closing for good
Big Lots says it’s closing all stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The discount chain is shutting down about 400 stores across the country, including six in South Florida.
Big Lots, a discount home good retailer founded in Ohio in 1967 as Consolidated Stores, began “going out of business” sales over the weekend. Most goods, which include closeout and overstock merchandise from other stores like furnishings, rugs and appliances, are marked down by 25%.
Christmas decor is marked down at 50%, according to Yahoo News.
Over the summer, Big lots announced the chain was closing 11 stores in Florida, nearly a third of the 40 it had planned to shutter nationwide in 2024, according to the Ohio-based company’s filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The South Florida list of shutdowns earlier this year included locations in Hallandale Beach, Miami Lakes and Hollywood.
Now, the rest of the stores are closing. Big Lots is looking to end it all in March.
“We all have worked extremely hard and have taken every step to complete a going concern sale,” Bruce Thorn, Big Lots’ president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “While we remain hopeful that we can close an alternative going concern transaction, in order to protect the value of the Big Lots estate, we have made the difficult decision to begin the [going out of business] process.”
Here’s a breakdown on the closings in South Florida:
