A Fort Lauderdale grocer used a urinal as a sink and had mold on the peanut boiler
All the food processing areas of a Fort Lauderdale grocery store got shut down Friday after a state inspector found wastewater draining onto surrounding grounds, a urinal used as a sink and other problems.
New “Stop Use Orders” flew at Shop-N-Save, 427 W. Sunrise Blvd., from Florida Department of Agriculture Inspector Leni Zunino, who also kept a 3-year-old Stop Use Order in place.
Here are some of the violations:
▪ In the backroom area, the “mop sink is currently used as a wash sink by employees, and the urinal is used as a service sink.”
▪ The handwash sinks at the backroom and food service areas didn’t have any soap.
▪ Even if they had soap, there wasn’t any hot water at either of those handwash sinks, the backroom’s restroom handwash sink or the three-compartment sink. This brought Stop Sales down on jars of pickled sausages and eggs, boiled eggs, lids and the peanut boiler (which had its own problems — see below) and Stop Use Orders for the air fryer, food warmer, hot box, ice scoops and food tongs.

▪ At the backroom handwashing sink by the three-compartment sink, “Water will return to the basin when the faucet is open and water is draining.” Another Stop Use Order.
▪ “Food establishment preparing food on a prep table located adjacent to a restroom door.” That and “restroom opens directly to an area where food has been processed” got a Stop Use Order issued for the processing area.
▪ Another reason for that Stop Use Order: “Wastewater created by the establishment was observed draining directly to the outdoor grounds with out been properly plumbed.”

▪ The store boils raw eggs (at least one was cracked and not kept at the proper temperature), fries bacon and chicken.
▪ “Food establishment has been informed that to sell open food, hot water must be provided at the handwash sinks and warewashing sink,” the inspection said. “Backflow issues must be corrected, a separation or vestibule must be provided at the restroom and a proper mop sink must be provided.”
▪ In the shopping area, there was “soil buildup and mold-like substance in the peanut boiler and on tongs used to grab patties.”
▪ The store hasn’t been able to use its walk-in cooler since an April 23, 2021, inspection, when it got hit with a Stop Use Order for being too warm to keep food at or under 41 degrees. Inspector Zunino found no reason to release the Stop Use Order.
