Which Winn-Dixie markets will become Aldi stores in South Florida? Here’s first list
Aldi is expanding in Florida with newly built stores. Now, the discount grocer is also converting several Winn-Dixie supermarkets.
The 222-store Aldi chain is growing with its acquisition of Winn-Dixie. The deal was finalized in March.
So far, four Winn-Dixie stores in South Florida are in line for conversion, Aldi and Winn-Dixie have confirmed.
Which Winn-Dixie stores are becoming Aldi?
At some point next year, these Winn-Dixie supermarkets will become Aldi stores:
▪ Aventura Winn-Dixie at 20417 Biscayne Blvd. This Winn-Dixie branch is known as one of South Florida’s two full-service kosher stores (the other is at 7024 Beracasa Way in Boca Raton). Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers, parent of Winn-Dixie, confirmed that the Aventura location has a kosher deli and bakery department.
Aldi, a discount grocer, may carry kosher items, but the stores don’t have cold and hot deli counters or butchers who customize cuts. Aldi, carries pre-packaged meat, poultry and fish.
Southeastern told the Miami Herald that more information on the conversion and look of the Aventura store would be shared during the transition period. “We appreciate the support and understanding of our valued associates, customers and communities throughout this process.”
▪ Fort Lauderdale Winn-Dixie at 941 SW 24th St.
▪ Boynton Beach Winn-Dixie at 8855 Boynton Beach Blvd.
▪ Westlake Winn-Dixie at 5060 Seminole Pratt Whitney Rd. in Palm Beach County.
When will the Winn-Dixie stores open as Aldi?
The Boynton Beach Winn-Dixie has closed to begin the conversion process.
The other three stores — in Aventura, Fort Lauderdale and Westlake — are projected to close in mid-January to convert to Aldi locations.
Each store will reopen to the community as an Aldi over the next several months, according to a statement to the Miami Herald from Aldi. The Illinois-based U.S. Aldi company did not give opening dates for the remodeled stores.
In August, Aldi confirmed an initial wave of Winn-Dixie to Aldi conversions in Florida’s Panama City, Deltona, Pensacola and Lakeland.
“While these stores are temporarily closed, we continue to proudly serve residents across Florida at our other area stores,” Aldi said. “We thank our customers for their years of loyalty and look forward to seeing them soon as a new Aldi.”
Meanwhile, Aldi continues to open newly built stores as well. In November, a new Aldi opened in the Sawyer’s Walk development in Miami’s Overtown.
