It’s down to Publix and Fresh Market as your favorite grocers in South Florida. Pick one
A field of more than 20 grocers serving South Florida — from Publix to Presidente and Winn-Dixie to Whole Foods, and the ABCs of Aldi, BJ’s and Costco — has come down to two choices.
Your votes in our Miami Herald Grocery Poll reveal that Publix and The Fresh Market are your Top 2.
Through August, you narrowed your favorite grocery stores in South Florida from the 20-plus to a Top 10 and a Top 5, and now a one-on-one contest pitting Lakeland giant Publix and its Pub Subs and BOGOs against Fresh Market and its European-styled food market approach.
So, let’s do it again, one last time.
Below you will find the Top 2 survivors in our survey. First you’ll find a summary of each store. At the bottom, you will find the survey.
Pick your favorite this week — maybe you like the selection, prices, atmosphere or location. The poll will close at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14.
Then we’ll present the winner.
Here’s what to know to make your voice heard:

About each store on the ballot
▪ The Fresh Market: Inspired by a European trip, Ray and Beverly Berry opened the first 14,000-square-foot Fresh Market in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1982. There are about 160 stores — 46 in Florida — featuring produce, bins of freshly-roasted coffees, floral stands, deli and other grocery goods.
▪ Publix: The Lakeland-based supermarket giant that coined the phrase, “Where shopping is a pleasure,” and, one could argue, the acronym BOGO and the sandwich nickname you’ll wait at the deli counter for, Pub Sub. Publix, founded by George Jenkins in Winter Haven in 1930, has 1,334 stores — 847 in Florida — according to the company’s most recent figures.
