Southwest Airlines is coming to Miami International Airport soon, airline officials said
Miami International Airport will be welcoming a new airline to its terminals: Southwest Airlines.
On Thursday, Southwest Airlines and MIA announced the airline’s plans to start its year-round service later this year.
Southwest will also bring its flight to Palm Springs International Airport in California.
““Our service to both of these airports will bring new, relevant options for our core customers,” the airline said in a statement. “Gradually, they’re rediscovering leisure travel across the country as their own situations allow.”
The airline said an additional destination in South Florida will complement its existing services in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Southwest already has a maintenance program at MIA, the company said.
Initial flight schedules have yet to be announced.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez tweeted his excitement for the new partnership.
“While #OurCounty is on its way to economic recovery I share with you some great news, with the announcement of this new airline joining MIA,” Gimenez said. “Our airport is our largest economic engine, and the addition of Southwest Air is very welcome.”
In a statement, Miami-Dade Aviation Department Director and CEO Lester Sola said, “Southwest’s expansion to Miami International Airport is one of the most significant milestones in our 92-year history as an airport.”
Sola, who oversees operations at MIA, continued to say that the airport will be offering four of the largest airlines in North America now with the inclusion of Southwest Airlines.
