The words “back” and “break” should never be associated with an office chair. That’s why HON recalled about 13,400 Gateway and Maxon MXMO office chairs on Wednesday.

The problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The chair’s back can break, posing fall and injury hazards to the user.”

And, the notice says, HON knows of 11 chair backs breaking, causing two “minor injuries.”

The $135 to $250 chairs were sold from February 2019 through this past February by Staples and Office Depot online and HON and Maxon dealers. The Gateway model Nos. are HGTMM and HGV1MM. The Maxon MXMO model Nos. are M-SEMO201 and M-SEMX101.

HON is offering repair, not replacement or refund, although you might be able to get the latter if you push for it.

Whatever course you decide, for HON brand chairs, email HONTeamBox@honcompany.com or call 800-833-3964, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time. For Maxon chairs, email service@maxonmail.com or call 800-876-4274, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Eastern time.
