Watch $10,000 come off the walls at this Broward pub. It went to laid-off employees
They say money doesn’t grow on trees.
But it’s all over the place at Hott Leggz, a bar in Fort Lauderdale.
At least it was.
The pub on Commercial Boulevard is known for its unusual decor: The walls and ceilings are plastered with dollar bills. It’s been a tradition since opening nine years ago. Customers donate their bills and often draw on them or mark them up.
The valuable decorations came to good use late last month, the Sun Sentinel first reported.
The owners and volunteers meticulously removed the money and gave it to workers who were laid off amid the coronavirus pandemic. Video on the bar’s Facebook page shows the grueling process.
About $10,000 was peeled off, co owner Juliana Sodre told the Miami Herald Wednesday. Just a few bucks are staying up.
“We’ve pulled down money before that got really dingy and dirty, but never like this,” she said of the bar that also does a toy drive during the holidays.
Just three of the sports pub’s 25 employees remain on the payroll, Sodre added.
Other bars around the country with cash as wallpaper have done the same type of charity work for their employees, including Hamburger Joe’s in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and The Sand Bar on Georgia’s Tybee Island.
