A crane crushed a worker’s foot. Two Florida companies face more than $34,000 in fines.
Fort Lauderdale-based Tom Krips Construction and Lake Worth-based Etherna Services each got cited by OSHA for its role in a crane crushing a worker’s foot and ankle as it was being disassembled in May.
This happened during work at Lago-Mar Place, 1750 S. Ocean Ln., in Fort Lauderdale. The Department of Labor announced the proposed fines Friday.
Krips got $29,877 in proposed fines for, according to OSHA’s Citation and Notification of Penalty: “failing to follow the disassembly procedures established by the manufacturer;” “employees were under the boom while in the process of removing the pins for disassembly;” and “not providing training on disassembly procedures to the Disassembly Director.”
The only other OSHA fine in the last five years for the company run by Thomas Krips Jr., Thomas Krips Sr. and Andrew Krips came earlier this year. Krips violated the rule that “employees working over or near water with a danger of drowning shall be provided with U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket or buoyant work vests.” A $3,696 fine got settled to $2,218.
Etherna’s proposed fine is $5,174 because OSHA found “the employer did not provide training to employees engaged in the disassembly of a 35-ton lattice boom crane and on the hazard recognition associated.”
This is also the second fine of the year for Etherna. A trio of serious violations involving ladders and fall protection added up to $12,804 in proposed fines for Etherna, registered in Florida by Rafael Prince in February.
