A recalled weight machine has paralyzed at least one person and broken a spine

When you talk about a weight-training workout that involved “destruction” and “destroying,” it’s supposed to mean what you did to your previous limits — not what the weights did to your body.

That’s why 15,000 Cybex Smith Press Model 5340 and 5341 plate-loaded weight-lifting setups got recalled Wednesday. The exact reason, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The weight bar can fall, posing serious injury hazards to the user.”

Serious, as in Cybex “has received 27 reports of injuries, including serious injuries of paralysis and spinal fracture.”

These were sold to gyms and individuals from 1989 through 2009. Cybex is offering free repair for model 5341, made from 1993 through 2009. For the current value of a 5340, sold from 1989 through 1993, Cybex offers a credit or refund of the current value.
