Univision Communications acquires The Root
Univision Communications Inc. has acquired The Root, a news and opinion website that serves African-American audiences.
The media company, which is geared to Hispanic Americans, said the acquisition would allow The Root to leverage the parent company’s digital production facilities and publishing infrastructure.
“Like Univision, The Root aims to serve a significant segment of America’s diverse population,” said Isaac Lee, president of news and digital for Univision Communications Inc., in a statement. “Our diverse communities are continuing to define the fabric of the country, from buying power, to social influence, to elections. This game-changing union strengthens our ability to fulfill our shared missions of informing and empowering our communities.”
The companies said The Root reaches an average of 5 million unique users per month, according to Internet analytics firm comScore.
