UM’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute named best in the country
The University of Miami medical school’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is the best eye hospital in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report rankings released Tuesday.
The eye institute has topped the list for 11 straight years for its reputation among ophthalmologists. It’s one of only 3 percent of U.S. hospitals to be ranked in any specialty, according to the magazine.
“To be named No. 1 is a great honor; to be named No. 1 year after year and without interruption can only happen when you have an unwavering commitment to groundbreaking research, education and world-class clinical care,” Pascal J. Goldschmidt, dean of UM’s Miller School of Medicine, said in a statement.
Bascom Palmer performs more than 13,000 surgeries a year, according to U.S. News and World Report. The hospital also contributes to eye research: Doctors are conducting clinical trials using gene therapy, retinal chips, genomics and stem cell therapy.
The eye institute was also listed as the Miami metro area’s No. 1 hospital.
