Who are Miami’s Carnaval kings this year? Here’s what you need to know about Calle Ocho
Is your social life in the midst of a dry spell during Miami’s winter doldrums?
Because before you know it, things are going to start really heating up around here, and we’re not just talking about the weather or the South Beach Wine & Food Festival.
In just a few weeks, you’ll be able to hit up two major street parties which fall on back to back weekends.
First up is Carnaval on the Mile, celebrating its 25th anniversary March 2-3. One of the largest Latino festivals in the country will take over Miracle Mile in Coral Gables. Think two days of local art exhibits, Caribbean food vendors, activities for the little ones and live music from Grammy winners Tony Succar and Ed Calle on two separate stages.
The fun’s not over, not by a long shot. The following weekend is the beyond festive Calle Ocho Music Festival, entering its 46th year.
If you’re bored at this outdoor extravaganza, then you may as well just never leave the house again. This local favorite is a party like no other, with entertainment, cigars, dominoes, food, and tunes at every turn.
Speaking of music, the Kings of Carnaval were just announced as Gente De Zona, made up of Alexander Delgado Hernández and Randy Malcom. The superstar Cuban duo is behind such behemoths as “La Gozadera,” “Te Duele” and “El Mentiroso.” They’ll headline the entertainment on the main stage so make sure you’re wearing dancing shoes.
“It’s very exciting,” said Malcom in a release. “We are very happy and it’s been an honor.”
