Things To Do

The circus is coming to town, Miami, and it’s now ‘reimagined.’ Here’s what to expect

The circus is coming to town, but not this town. You’ll have to drive a few miles north to Broward.

But since it’s still known as the Greatest Show on Earth, force yourself for the ‘Gram.

In all seriousness, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey institution, stopping by Amerant Bank Arena (formerly FLA Live) in Sunrise for six performances on Saturday and Sunday, looks a little different these days, in a good way.

Gone are all the controversial animals at this “reimagined” show, which will focus more on family activities, musical and dance performances, comedy routines and Cirque de Soleil style acrobatics.

Highlights include The Triangular Highwire, led by sixth generation circus artists The Lopez Family. The pros effortlessly ride bikes, balance on each other’s shoulders and do handstands all while balancing on three, 25-foot-tall, connected wires shaped like at triangle.

Other daredevils include trapeze artists, trampoline bouncers, aerialists, and even a human cannonball, Skyler Miser, who will launch herself out of a rocket at 65 mph for kicks and giggles.

Another cool, new element is the Ultimate Playground, which is definitely not about monkey bars, slides or swings. It’s a danger zone where extreme BMX riders zip around at alarmingly high speeds and hopefully not end up in the ER.

Among the roughly 75 performers is a local: Wesley Williams, aka the One Wheel Wonder, is a Weston native and Guinness World Record holder for the tallest ever unicycle — more than three stories high. We are going to ask if he ever took it out for a spin on the turnpike.
