Zombie fighters, cosplay and comics: Florida Supercon returns to Miami Beach
By now, your costume is finished, and your cosplay game is strong. So get ready to fire up your light sabers — Florida Supercon returns to Miami Beach this weekend.
The annual event for fans of all forms of pop culture — comics, anime, manga, video games, TV, movies and more — opens Friday at the Miami Beach Convention Center. You don’t need a costume to enter. We promise a T shirt and shorts are fine. But if you want to dress up like Spider-Man or Harley Quinn or Daryl from “The Walking Dead,” all the better.
The event, which was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, returned last year at a smaller scale. This year, Florida Supercon is featuring a variety of guests, including Edward James Olmos (“Battlestar Gallactica,” “Blade Runner”); Freddie Prinze Jr. (“Scooby Doo,” “Star Wars Rebels”) and Prinze’s “She’s All That” co-star Rachel Leigh Cook (also of “Josie and the Pussycats” and “Final Fantasy IV: Advent Children”).
There’s truly something for everybody. Take Saturday, for example. Fans of “Harry Potter” might revel in a panel with James and Oliver Phelps, better known as the Weasley twins (noon), while comics lovers may prefer a chance to hear Jim Lee, co-publisher of DC Comics and known for his art on Batman, Justice League, and Suicide Squad (12:30 p.m.) For those dark souls whose tastes run to the undead, there’s a “Walking Dead” panel with Michael Rooker, Ross Marquand, Cooper Andrews and Seth Gilliam (3 p.m.).
There are also appearances by comics creators and artists as well as photo opportunities and autograph sessions. The “After Dark” series features late-night karaoke, gaming, anime watch parties, special panels and more late into the night, while Pop Asia is an anime convention-within-a-convention.
At Cosplay Central, part of the show floor devoted to the art of costumes, crafts and characters, new and seasoned cosplayers alike can attend workshops and panels and even get a quick costume fix if it’s needed.
