Grammy award-winning musician Paquito D’Rivera will perform with the New World School of the Arts Jazz students at the South Motors Gen-Next Jazz concert on Nov. 20 in Pinecrest. Miami loves the Cuban-born clarinetist and saxophonist, who plays jazz and classical music. I salute the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and South Motors for their generosity in presenting these free top-notch concerts to the masses living in the suburbs. (Note: $5 park admission fee; $3 for senior citizens.)
Mad Hatter Arts Festival
The annual Mad Hatter Arts Festival returns to the Barnacle State Historic Park in Coconut Grove on Nov. 19 and 20. The $2 park admission gets you into the festival, which features artists, vintages, music and entertainment. Expect to see all sorts of crazy hats, like the one the Mad Hatter uses, at a hat contest. There also will be a screening of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” on Nov. 19. Admission to the movie is $5 for ages 6 and up; $3 for children ages 2-5 and children under 2 are free.
Miami Book Fair
The annual Miami Book Fair at Miami-Dade College’s Downtown Campus culminates this weekend with loads of free and cheap events for the entire family. Some notable authors who will be speaking at free events on Nov. 19-20 include Sen. Bernie Sanders, Dave Barry, Dana Perino and more. Bring the kids and take them to Children’s Alley for kid-friendly activities, and when you want a break from the books, head to The Porch for food and music, among other entertainment.
Free admissions to attractions
Veterans Day may have passed but veterans, members of the military and their families are still being saluted at Zoo Miami and Jungle Islands with free admission through the end of this weekend. Enjoy the days at these area attractions. Y’all definitely deserve it.
