Two food festivals are on for this weekend and other events include parades for Veterans Day, intellectual conversations at the book fair, and an afternoon of classical piano. These are some of the highlights of the free and cheap, but check out Miami On The Cheap’s website for a full list. Enjoy:
Feeling patriotic and grateful? Acknowledge the service of military veterans at various free parades and events throughout Miami-Dade County on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. Military families also can get free and discounted admission to Miami Seaquarium, Jungle Island and Zoo Miami.
Chipotle Cultivate Festival
The festivals that catch my eye usually involve food and this one fits the bill. Chipotle Mexican Grill, that phenomenon that has captured the cravings of our teenagers, is bringing brings together chefs (locally and nationally renowned), brewers, wine makers and musicians to create an engaging environment and inspire conversation about food and sustainability. The Nov. 12 event in downtown Miami is free to attend, and includes concerts and chef demos, while food and drink are available for purchase.
Seafood Fest and Fish Fry
Speaking of food that catches my eye, the 5th annual Seafood Fest and Fish Fry is this weekend in South Dade. Admission is $8 for adults, and free for children ages 11 and under. The event features delectable local seafood in various styles from around the world including shrimp, grouper, conch fritters, and crab cakes. Seafood choices will range from Thai to Caribbean. Enjoy music from live bands and children’s activities, including learning how to fish.
The Miami Book Fair is not your father’s book fair. This fair has come a long way, now considered to be among the top in the country. There are so many free events to attend that it is tough to list them all, but we sure tried, so take a look. Some of the top free events this weekend include Jorge Ramos of Univision, who will speak on Nov. 13. Bring the kids and take them to Children’s Alley for kid-friendly activities, and when you want a break from the books, head to The Porch for food and music, among other entertainment.
Listen to the music of Chopin and other classics for free on Nov. 13 in Coral Gables when pianist Drew Petersen performs. Petersen is a recipient of many accolades and has performed around the country. If you’re in Broward County, you can catch Petersen on Nov. 12.
