Things To Do

Free and cheap events in Miami this weekend - Oct. 7-9

Thankfully, Hurricane Matthew didn’t affect South Florida as much as we feared. So now that we have a long weekend, let’s see which events you can still afford to visit, assuming you didn’t spend all your money on bottled water and Spam.

Arsht Center’s 10th birthday celebration

The Adrienne Arsht Center in downtown Miami celebrates its 10th birthday (wow, where has the time gone?) with 10 hours of free performances, then a $10 concert featuring CeeLo Green and others, and then a free after-party. It all starts at 11 am on Oct. 8. The free performances include children’s entertainment so bring the whole family.

Free symphony concert

The Alhambra Orchestra presents a free symphony concert on Oct. 9 at Florida International University in Southwest Miami-Dade County. The Alhambra Orchestra opens its 27th concert season with “Beethoven 5 Plus” featuring the ever-popular Fifth Symphony of Beethoven, the piece most often requested by the audience.  Bring the whole family for this free concert and stay for a post-concert dessert reception to meet the musicians.  Free admission, plenty of parking, no tickets or reservations needed.

Swamp music concert

The Barnacle Historic State Park’s Under Moonlight Concert series runs every second Sunday of the month from September through May and features an impressive line-up of various smusicians. On Oct. 9, local band Iko-Iko performs and their Urban Swamp Music includes a swirling mix of Blues, Mardi Gras, Gulf Coast Americana, jazz, jam band sensibilities, and Rock and Roll. Concerts are $10 for adults, $8 for members of The Barnacle Society and $3 for children ages 6 to 9 (under 6 free). Flashlights recommended. No pets. Bring the lawn chairs and blankets.

Coral Gables Oktoberfest

This is the last weekend to get your oopah on at the 22nd annual Coral Gables Oktoberfest with Bavarian food, live music from German and Austrian bands, beer specials, a raffle prize and more. Free admission. There are many more Oktoberfest celebrations coming up in Miami but this one that is ending is usually a good one.
