This photographer thought she would capture beauty in her nude portraits of women. But she discovered something else.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, photographer Amy Gelb will present a project she has worked on over four years photographing naked women. The purpose was to offer a photographic look at the real bodies of over a hundred women from all backgrounds and ranging in age from 19 to 90.
Subjects are shown nude below the chin and above the pubic bone so their identities can remain hidden. A good number of the women showcased are breast cancer survivors, while a few passed away from the disease. The subject is close to the artists’ heart, as her own mother battled breast cancer and won.
According to Gelb, the initial goal for the series was to explore beauty by recognizing women’s’ unspoken pressures. But over the course of shooting, she realized, “It is absolutely not about beauty…for me, the real issue is why can’t we shift the conversation away from being beautiful to more meaningful aspects of ourselves and each other?”
Kicking off with a party from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Sagamore in Miami Beach, the exhibition will be on display through Oct. 20. Guests who buy prints at the event will choose to donate 10 percent of their purchase to either Women of Tomorrow or American Cancer Society.
