Doral, others lead relief efforts after Hurricane Irma. Here’s how you can help.
While the Florida Keys continue to dig out of the destruction wrought by Hurricane Irma, back in Miami-Dade County more than 300,000 Florida Power and Light customers are stuck in insufferable heat. But one city is stepping up its efforts to help hurricane victims in the midst of Irma’s aftermath: Doral.
Establishments throughout the Doral — bowling alleys, restaurants and malls — are pledging their support by raising funds or collecting supplies.
1. Kings Dining & Entertainment Doral
Kings Dining & Entertainment, which recently opened a new location in Doral, is dedicating the remaining weeks in September to fundraising for Hurricane Irma relief at all 10 of its locations in Massachusetts, Tennessee, Illinois, North Carolina and Florida.
On Sept. 18 and Sept. 25 50 percent of sales will be donated to the American Red Cross. Full proceeds for $5 bracelets will also be donated to the American Red Cross, while guests who donate to the Kings GoFundMe page will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a private party.
2. Rusty Bucket Restaurant & Tavern
The Rusty Bucket is teaming up with its sister company, Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, to raise $150,000 to donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund in an effort to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. On Sept. 18, the Rusty Bucket will donate all its profits and encourage guests to make their own donations to the Red Cross. Guests will be rewarded with $10 gift cards for every $50 donated.
3. Downtown Doral
Downtown Doral has invited families to escape the heat of their homes for an afternoon of family-friendly fun. “Downtown Doral Gives Back” will have a water slide, bounce houses, a DJ and giveaways. Benefits will be donated to The Miami Foundation’s Hurricane Relief Fund.
4. CityPlace Doral
CityPlace Doral is hosting a hurricane relief benefit concert featuring El Tumbao. Attendees can expect live music and giveaways, in addition to post-Irma efforts with ESPN Deportes 990 AM and Exitos 107.1. CityPlace Doral partnered with United Way, which will be accepting donations all evening. The free concert is Saturday at 7 p.m. at CityPlace Doral’s plaza.
5. The Tank Brewing
The Tank Brewing Co. is accepting donations Thursday in partnership with Imperial Freight Brokers and Brokers Cartage Company for the Monroe County victims of Hurricane Irma. They are asking for water, non-perishable items and other food, which will be delivered to various locations throughout the Florida Keys.
6. Simon Malls across South Florida
People can drop off donations to Dadeland Mall, The Falls and Miami International Mall, which are collection sites for the Red Cross for the rest of September.
Through Sept. 30, guest are asked to donate water, non-perishable foods, blankets and pillows, portable phone charges, paper plates and plastic eating utensils. Supplies can be dropped off at the mall management offices at The Falls between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and at guest services at Dadeland and Miami International malls from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., respectively.
7. Nikki Beach
On Sept. 17, Nikki Beach is offering one free cocktail to guests who bring donation items for Hurricane Irma victims. Acceptable donations include canned goods, hygienic products, diapers and other toiletries.
8. The Salty Donut
The Salty Donut is reopening Friday and are jumping at the opportunity to help those impacted by Hurricane Irma. A portion of all profits at the Wynwood artisan doughnut shop will be donated between Sept. 15 and Sept. 30.
9. Sugar at EAST, Miami
Sugar, the rooftop bar at EAST, Miami will donate $2 from each specialty cocktail to Feeding South Florida.
10. Wall Miami
This South Beach nightclub is going to donate all revenue made at the door to the Red Cross starting Friday through Sunday.
11. Frost Science Museum
The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science has invited first responders and military veterans to enjoy its exhibitions for free beginning Friday through Oct. 1.
The museum is also accepting donations for Hurricane Irma victims during that time. Patrons are asked to drop off food, water and personal hygiene items between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Check the Frost Science website for acceptable donations.
