Things To Do

Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Oct. 3-5

Head south, way south and get at preview of the upcoming season at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) at a Backyard Bash or wind your way through downtown Coconut Grove and welcome back the return of Fashion Arts Music Night, both on Saturday night.

For the astronomy fans out there, lean back in your chair and look up at the star-filled sky under the dome during the free Planetarium show on Friday at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science or visit the museum of your choice for free all weekend by flashing a Bank of America card through the Museums on Us program.

October is Miami Attractions Month, which means 2-for-1 admission or other deals at 17 Miami-Dade attractions and museums.

SMDCAC season kick-off at Backyard Bash

Miami’s homegrown Spam All-Stars are part of the musical line-up at the Backyard Bash at 7 p.m. Saturday at a free concert at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. Joining the band are ‘70s-style funk pop group Ribab Fusion and salsa/ska/funk/R&B band Xperimento. After working up an appetite dancing to the beats, grab some grub at the food trucks then tour the facilities and meet the SMDCAC staff.

Hoist a stein at 11-day Oktoberfest bash

It’s fitting that Fritz & Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables would host 11 straight days of German-inspired fun in honor of Oktoberfest from Oct. 2-12. This weekend’s festivities include performances by top Austrian bands including Gruppe Gastein and Jimmy & Erhard at 2 p.m. Sunday, with a beer-stein holding contest at 4 p.m. Or get your pipes ready for the yodeling contest.

F.A.M. nights back on Saturday at Coconut Grove

Wind your way through the streets of Coconut Grove taking in all that Fashion Arts Music night has to offer. The first event of the season is on Saturday from 7-10 p.m. Festivities will include performances by local drummer Chris Rod at CocoWalk and folk/dub musician Adrian Gonzalez at Vino’s in the Grove, a Witch’s Potion workshop for the kids with slime making and a balloon-popping raffle at Art Box and an interactive and customized art class at Bottle & Bottega at CocoWalk.

Cultural crawl with the artists

Crawling along Lincoln Road should really be a rite of passage for any Miamian so chances are Art Center/South Florida is a familiar spot to most people. This Saturday, from 7-10 p.m. artists will be in their studios in both buildings that make up the center to chat with cultural hounds and talk about what inspires their work. Make a night of it and walk just a block or two to grab a drink or dinner at one of the Road’s many well-known spots.

Morning and afternoon park nature walks in Broward

Take a morning or afternoon stroll along the nature trail at Secret Woods Park in Dania Beach on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. A park naturalist leads a tour of the trails through the 57-acre Wilderness area pointing out native habitats like a laurel oak hammock and the cypress/maple wetland.
