Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Sept. 19-21

Downtown Miami is overflowing with art exhibits and art-inspired events for three days this weekend during Downtown Art Days, so hop on the downtown trolley and spend a few days overloading on culture. Or spend Saturday and Sunday celebrating Octoberfest early with a few Samuel Adams brews during Octoberfest at Soho Studios.

If you’d prefer to step back in time and hear a concert of big band, swing and Dixieland favorites, catch the U.S. Army Field Band on Friday night at Actors’ Playhouse or listen to the rock, pop, jazz fusion of Latin artists Alexis y su Codigo Lay, also on Friday, at Centro Cultural Espanol en Miami.

Installations, art talks, exhibits and parties at Downtown Art Days

Kick off three days of culture and celebrating all that downtown Miami has to offer on Friday night from 6-9 p.m. during the Side by Side: MDCulture Stands Alone event at the MDC Museum of Art + Design at the Freedom Tower. This evening, street artist LEBO unveils his 2014 Miami Book Fair poster, the new Cuban Exile Experience gallery opens and film screenings and performances round out the festivities.

Cheers to Octoberfest and Samuel Adams brews   

The third annual Octoberfest celebration in Wynwood on Friday and Saturday will be at hipster event space Soho Studios. The party starts at 6 on Friday and 5 on Saturday, when you can roam the beer hall and grab your complimentary brew, stroll by the Sam Adams Experience display, cheer at the “Raise the Stein” contest (or enter but pre-registration’s required) and dance to the DJ sounds. Enter the code “octobeer” to get in for the discounted price of $10.

Roving, site-specific theater in the Design District

Mad Cat Theatre, University of Miami’s Department of Theatre Arts and spoken word poet Robert Lee are joining forces to present a site-specific performance series on Saturday from 8-9:30 p.m. in the Moore and Garden Buildings in the Design District. The evening features the performances “Rebel Yell” by Mad Cat,” “Peter and the Starcatcher” by UM (based on Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s book) plus a spoken word performance open to writers and arts lovers who want to step up to the mic.

Browse and explore at Bird Road Art Walk

The Bird Road Art Walk on Saturday from 7-10 p.m. provides art lovers a chance to view all types of art. Whatever floats your boat, from Jane Harris’s “Purge…An Art Happening” at Harrisart to “Through the Eyes of Another,” featuring works created by individuals with multiple sclerosis, showing at Anhniga Clay Studios.

Night Owl Market Flagler Fusion Street Festival

Spend Saturday night checking out pop up shops, test-driving an electric car, dining on savory food truck fare and buying fresh produce at the green market during the Night Owl Market at Flagler Village Street Festival in downtown Fort Lauderdale from 5-11 p.m. With free admission and free parking and shuttles, you’ll want to stay the duration and check out live music and enjoy a free beer while listening.
