The founder of popular Haitian Facebook account wants you to bowl for education
If you’re Haitian in South Florida, chances are that you’ve encountered the Facebook page @TheHaitianAmerican. The account shares a mixture of humorous and inspirational posts from a blog called L’Union Suite, which publishes content for a mostly English-speaking Haitian audience that has become wildly popular since its inception in 2011.
But its founder has demonstrated that she can do more than connect Haitian people over social media; she’s also invested in improving education and opportunity in Haiti.
Wanda Tima-Gilles growing influence in the Haitian community has coincided with the growth of her website, lunionsuite.com, earning her connections with some of the biggest Haitian celebrities in the United States. For the past three years, Tima has used her platform at L’Union Suite to raise funds for various educational initiatives that benefit the people of Haiti.
The Third Annual “Strike for Education Charity Bowl” is a fundraising competition for a resource center at College Bell Angelot, which serves middle and high school-aged children in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. Media entrepreneur Karen Civil will join South Florida rapper Ace Hood and others as they bowl on the celebrity team “Team Lakay.” The event is Sunday from 6 to 1- p.m. at Sparez Bowling, 5325 S University Dr. in Davie. Individual players are invited to join in on the fun and can purchase tickets for $25, while registration for a team of four costs $160 at www.SFEBowl.eventbrite.com.
