Things To Do

Take your dog to the Canine Film Festival. He behaves better than your kids

You’ve heard of Take Your Dog to Work Day, right? Now you can take your dog to the movies.

And not just any movie. Dog-appropriate movies (no “Marley & Me” here – too traumatic for you and the dog and anybody in a half-mile radius who has to listen to you sob).

The Canine Film Festival runs July 15 and 16 at the Cinépolis Coconut Grove and dog-friendly Hotel Indigo in Miami Lakes. And if you fear the event caters solely to precious, tiny purse dogs with bows in their fur, you’re wrong: the goal is to help raise money for local animal shelters in South Florida.

Here’s the schedule:

11 a.m.-4 p.m. July 15 at Cinépolis Coconut Grove, 3015 Grand Ave.: The red carpet rolls out at 11 a.m. for strolling and sniffing, followed by screenings of the short films competing for the “Barker Awards.” The day continues with a canine fashion show and the awards presentation, which should be much more coherent than the Academy Awards last February.

9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 16 at Hotel Indigo, 7601 Miami Lakes Dr., Miami Lakes: Start your day with a yoga session for you and your dog with instructor Tara Smith, then enjoy a poolside brunch. While you’re brunching, your dog gets an organic “bark-fest.” We are pretty sure the two menus are entirely different. The day wraps up with a “Hollywoof” costume contest.

Tickets start at $10.
