Things To Do

Five things you may not know about One Direction

Your tween daughters might know just about everything about Brit boy band One Direction, (Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson) but there’s plenty about this power-pop quintuplet that escapes the breathless headlines. The group wraps up a two-day swing through South Florida tonight at the AmericanAirlines Arena after rocking the BB&T Center in Sunrise Thursday. Here are five things even your hyperventilating female offspring might not know:

1. It’s the first British group to hit No. 1 in America with its debut album, “Up All Night.”

No comment from former Beatle Paul McCartney, but fans were spooked by a violent shudder at John Lennon’s grave when the news was announced.

2. The group was sued in 2012.

An American band claimed to have used the name One Direction since 2009, and wanted an absurd three times the profits made by the U.K. band, plus compensatory damages topping a million bucks. One Direction’s Syco Records countersued and won, but the U.S. band — now called Unchartered Shores — was reportedly “happy with the outcome.” Ah, the legal system.

3. You most likely cannot look or sing like the Fab Five, but now you can smell like them.

Yes, One Direction now has its own fragrance, Our Moment, described by the band as “sweet and subtle.” Which is pretty much the direct opposite of the band’s over-the-top power-pop sound.

4. Unlike most boy bands, the group is eager to begin writing its own songs.

Band members have even signed their own publishing deals. “They have absolutely no intention of being spoon-fed pop puppets,” says a source quoted by Perez Hilton. Watch out, Lennon and McCartney!

5. “This Is Us,” a 3D biopic about One Direction, will hit theaters at the end of August.

Director? Morgan Spurlock, best known for the documentary Super Size Me, in which he ate nothing but McDonald’s food for 30 days, gained 25 pounds, and suffered from liver dysfunction and depression. As of yet, no word on any physical effects from his new project.
