Cuba Nostalgia: Top 7 things to do
Some Miami residents have grown up hearing about the Cuba of their parents’ (or grandparents’) day. Cuba Nostalgia, in its 14th year, brings the feel of the island to the Miami-Dade Fair and Expo center, creating a special journey back in time for those who want a dose of the Cuba of yesteryear while providing a glimpse of the island’s heyday for those who never got to experience them. Here is what to expect:
1. Exhibits
Check out the replicas of El Malecon, Havana’s oceanside boulevard as well as Our Lady of Caridad del Cobra, a Cuban bodega and plenty of other pop up sets that will make it seem like you are strolling through Havana.
2. Art
Fine Cuban art galleries will feature classic artists such as Lam, Pelaez and Portocarrero, as well as contemporary artists, such as Calzada, Mijares and Bermudez showcasing their work in various media.
3. Music
Take home the best of Cuban music on DVD; habanera, danzon, son, cha cha cha, pregon, bolero, guaracha, and mambo. Also, enjoy live acts playing favorites throughout the event.
4. Memorabilia
Grab vintage recordings, cigars, maps, postcards, stamps and poster and any item you could want with an embossed Cuban flag.
5. Books
For the history buffs there will be a selection of antique and first edition books as well as magazines and history books.
6. Jewelry
Several local jewelers will be set up at the event offering vintage coin necklaces, bangles, gold chains and everything else any self-respecting Cuban has in their jewelry box.
7. Food & Drink
Enjoy Cuban food from Mambo Café like Pan con Lechon (pork sandwiches), Media Noches, croquetas, tamales, mariquitas (plantain chips), or a “completa” (a square meal). Wash it down with traditional Cuban soft drinks like Cawy (lemon/lime), Materva (mate), and Jupiña (pineapple). Want something a little harder? Lift your spirits with Hatuey Beer, Grey Goose Vodka, or a Cuba Libre made with Bacardi rum and Coke.
