Bikes and Beats
Where: Coconut Grove Metrorail Station, 2780 SW 27th Ave., Miami, FL
Hosted by the Underline Cycling Club, you’ll ride under the Metrorail from the Coconut Grove station at 27th Avenue, six miles south to the Dadeland North Metrorail station. During the trek there will be music by Silent Revolution and a rest stop for a chance to chow and throw the Frisbee around. That means, pack plenty of water, snacks, lunch and yes, a Frisbee. If the 12-mile round trip is too much, you can always board the Metrorail with your bike in tow and ride the six miles back in air conditioned comfort.
Where: Washington Ave. from 5th to 16th St., Miami Beach, FL
If you prefer a different scene then head to Miami Beach. They’re closing down South Beach’s Washington Avenue for seven hours so that means no vehicular traffic at all. It also means drivers — prepare for some detours because bicyclists will be making stops from 5th to 16th streets to check out all the shops and eateries along the way. The family-friendly ride is open to all ages and pets as well so bring the pooch along for the ride.
Gables Bike Tour: Merrick’s Entrances
Where: Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables, FL
In honor of the father of Coral Gables George Merrick, and a great pairing to the current exhibition at the Coral Gables Museum about his masterplan for the city, it’s only fitting this tour should begin there. On the three-hour tour (not to sound like Gilligan’s Island) you’ll visit the Merrick’s various grand entrances throughout the City Beautiful and learn fun historical and architectural facts about them. Tour guides will also delve into Merrick’s political history and his hand in creating the Tamiami Trail.
