Getting down at Viernes Culturales in Little Havana.
Getting down at Viernes Culturales in Little Havana.

Listen to Latin jazz, participate in Latin culture, sample chocolate delicacies or take the kids out for entertainment that’s easy on the wallet this weekend in Miami. Here are some of those highlights:

Maria Rivas at MOCA

If you enjoy listening to Latin jazz, listen to Maria Rivas at the free last Friday of the month concert (and free admission) at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. Rivas will sing along with Danny Burger on the drums, Brian Murphy on piano/keyboards, and Nicky Orta on bass. Known as one of the most versatile voices in Latin America and now North America, Rivas skillfully combines American and Latin Jazz rhythms with lively yet sentimental music from around the world. She interprets her music in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, and performs her own blend of traditional standards as well as music and lyrics she has composed herself. Her songs include El Manduco, El Mororizado, Poco a Poco and more.

Viernes Culturales

As if you needed a reason to head to Little Havana for a night of fun, along comes the last Friday of the month for Cultural Fridays.  Dance, eat, shop and check out the beautiful artwork from local artists in and around Domino Plaza at Southwest 8th Street and 15th Avenue.  Take a free walking tour of the area or watch cigars rolled right before your eyes — just like in the Cuba of yesteryear. Both the grandparents and the youngsters can play dominoes together under the stars.

Chocolate festival

The Aztecs believed cacao seeds were gifts from the God of Wisdom. Hey, that’s good enough for me! This Saturday, spend the afternoon at the free Chocolate Festival in Miami International Mall. Sample delectable treats from South Florida’s finest chocolate, and listen to classes on how to make chocolate followed by demonstrations from master chefs.  There also will be a chocolate fashion exhibit with designs from students and faculty at Miami International School of Art & Design. The event is free, but donations are encouraged and benefit the Foundation for New Education Incentives at Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Orchestra Miami’s ‘Witches, Wizards, Spells & Elves: The Magic of Shakespeare’

From Sunny Isles Beach to Tropical Park to South Dade to Downtown Miami, there’s something for the youngsters:

Orchestra Miami presents Witches, Wizards, Spells & Elves: The Magic of Shakespeare, with music by award-winning composer Bruce Adolphe. Theatrical magic and musical masters blend to introduce kids to the works of Shakespeare. Actors from Shakespeare Miami and musicians from Orchestra Miami bring together theater and classical music to create this interactive concert. $10 for kids ages 3-17, $15 for adults, free for kids under three. It’s happening Sunday afternoon in Sunny Isles Beach.

In memory of Erika Spaide, who passed away from a rare genetic disease, a family fun day at Tropical Park on Sunday will raise funds for Batten Disease Research. The $5 admission gets the youngsters in for an active day of face painting, bouncing, pony rides, and much more.
