Feeling adventurous? You can start your weekend off with the mega-hit dinosaur scream fest Jurassic Park at Actors’ Playhouse. Or you can take a trip through another jungle, our own Jungle Island, for a reduced admission fee this weekend.
You’ll want to make a trip to Fresh Market not just to pick up groceries but to sample tasty bites at the chef-prepared cooking demos. And it’s Bank of America card Museums on Us weekend, which means a chance to get into museums free with your credit or debit card.

T-Rex on the loose
Jurassic Park is one of those movies that must be seen on the big screen, and Actors’ Playhouse is offering two opportunities to see it free this weekend. Watch Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Richard Attenborough (as the genius that invented the place) and a couple of freaked-out kids enter what seems like an enchanting amusement park only to end up running for their lives. Show times are Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. You have to reserve tickets ahead online or by phone, and movie goers get free popcorn.
Visit Jungle Island on the cheap
Jungle Island’s popular Neighbor Days promotion appropriately kicks off on Labor Day weekend. That means that starting Saturday and Sunday, and every weekend in September, admission to the attraction drops to $15 from the regular $34.95 for adults and $26.95 for kids. Proof of Florida residency is required. Once you and the family have worked up an appetite, you can enjoy a large pizza and four sodas for $15, another deal available only during September weekends. The attraction is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
Gourmet eats while you shop
A trip to Fresh Market takes you to a veritable gourmet wonderland any day of the week but throw chef-prepared samplings into the mix and we’re talking lunch while you grocery shop. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Grove location and 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday in Kendall, you can taste Chef Kristin Johanson’s sundried tomato shrimp and couscous salad. After you watch her make it you can go home and prepare it yourself with a recipe card and fresh ingredients you buy.
Do the museum crawl
Bar crawls and food crawls are all the rage lately, but why not try a museum crawl? Spend Saturday and Sunday visiting South Florida’s museums, and if you show your Bank of America card, admission is free. That means you can relax on those cool swing baskets at PAMM while admiring the bayfront view, see the cool outdoor hanging sculptures at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami and visit the Miami Children’s Museum. In Broward, you can visit the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science.
$5 gets you in and food trucks are a bonus
Flamingo Gardens in Davie brings in the food trucks on first Friday of the month and offers $5 discount admission after 4 p.m. This is the perfect time to enjoy the botanical gardens and wildlife sanctuary. After all that walking you can head to the parking lot and feast on food truck fare. The event, from 5 to 9 p.m., also features live entertainment.
