The MOCA Plaza in North Miami is a busy place this weekend with Jazz at MOCA on Friday and the Art & Reason Symposium on Saturday. Also on Saturday, the Smithsonian is hosting its Museum Day Live nationwide with free admission to a number of South Florida museums and attractions.
On Friday night you can return to the ’70s and the days of roller skating rinks by lacing up a pair of skates and joining Bayskate Miami at Bayfront Park. Plus, there are a couple of spots to catch cheap movies — for adults in Coral Gables and for kids at Grapeland Water Park.
The MOCA Plaza’s hopping this weekend
The monthly Jazz at MOCA is Friday night at the Museum of Contemporary Art, where from 7-10 p.m. the galleries remain open by donation. Ariel Alexandro de la Portilla takes the stage at 8 p.m. for a free concert. On Saturday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., the museum plaza will be the site of the Art & Reason Symposium, in partnership with the Rockers Movement. Festivities include dance performances by a drum circle, Tribu Na’al Gonah Tribal Dancers and Peter London Global Dance Company, spoken word by The Viking Freedom Writers, along with an art exhibition, musical performances by Jahfe, Jasmin Karma, Selector Iscious and Rocker Movements and an arts and crafts show by Chatoyance. Admission to both events is free.
Grab a pair of free museum passes, thanks to the Smithsonian
The Smithsonian Institution in Washington is always free, and on Saturday as part of its Museum Day Live! you can snag a pair of free passes to a whole bunch of museums and attractions around South Florida. On the list are the Coral Gables Museum, ZooMiami and Gold Coast Railroad Museum in South Miami-Dade, Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU and Wolfsonian-FIU, both on Miami Beach, the Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables, MDC Museum of Art+Design in downtown Miami’s Freedom Tower and the Ancient Spanish Monastery Museum in North Miami Beach, plus museums in Broward, Palm Beach and the Florida Keys. There’s a catch, though — you must request the tickets in advance.
Grapeland’s final movie splash and comedy horror in the Gables
Grapeland Water Park is stretching the summer out for one final weekend on Friday night with the final dive-in movie of the season. Earth to Echo is about a group of kids on an adventure with an alien. Pool time is 5:30-7:30 p.m., and screening is at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. On Saturday night, take a fun comedic romp with the wacky Steve Martin in the classic Little Shop of Horrors showing at the Coral Gables Art Cinema at 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $7.
Catch some S.T.E.A.M. at the Broward Main Library
The Broward Main Library is celebrating S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) with a S.T.E.A.M.
