We have always liked Key West, despite the higher bills that confront us when we drive down for a visit. Still, there’s so much to recommend the town: The debauchery of Fantasy Fest. Great food, great sunsets and the casual acceptance of semi-drunken bicycling at all hours of the day.

The website’s Readers Choice Awards named Key West as one of the best small cities in America. It’s no. 10 on a list that includes, in order, Charleston, South Carolina; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Savannah, Georgia; Alexandria, Virginia.; Sarasota; Sedona, Arizona; Monterey, California; Asheville, North Carolina; and Greenville, South Carolina.
“The island city defies stereotypes with its diverse architecture, seafood restaurants, and epic sunsets,” says the report, which goes on to recommend the hogfish sandwich at Hogfish bar and the Key lime pie at Blue Heaven. For activities, it recommends a visit to the Hemingway Home and Museum and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park for swimming and snorkeling.
We don’t disagree with this assessment. Key lime pie in Key West is an absolute must. But just a tip, Condé Naste: It’s Jimmy Buffett, not Buffet.
And sorry, Miami. You did not make it onto the Best Big Cities list. Then again, no Florida cities made the best big cities list. Condé Naste Traveler readers have clearly been stuck in a traffic jam on 836.
Chicago was no. 1, followed by New York at no. 2. The rest of the list: New Orleans; San Francisco; Honolulu; San Antonio; Seattle; Portland; and Boston.
