Couldn’t get away to New Orleans for the debauchery? Well, two events this weekend celebrate Mardi Gras: Giralda Under the Stars in Coral Gables on Friday evening and the Mardi Gras Parade & Crawfish Boil in Homestead on Saturday. Both offer some of the pageantry of Nawlins’ Mardi Gras. The celebration on Giralda Avenue, a.k.a Restaurant Row, offers live music, stilt walkers, dancers, beads and more. The celebration on Krome Avenue in Homestead offers Cajun spiced crawfish, live music, beads, “a really short” parade and more. Both have free admission.
Carnaval on the Mile
On Saturday and Sunday, Miracle Mile in Coral Gables opens up for Carnaval on the Mile, a free art and music festival, which is a prelude to next weekend’s Calle Ocho street festival. The Latin music on Miracle Mile will be outstanding with a lot of great bands, including Conjunto Progreso, Locos por Juana, Suenalo, La Santa Cecilia and many more too numerous to mention.
Florida Grand Opera Family Day
Florida Grand Opera is making the rounds throughout the community and this Saturday the talented opera folks will be in Hialeah’s Milander Center for Family Day. It’s a great opportunity for kids to learn about all the aspects of a great performance, including the special effects created on stage, instrument playing, singing like an opera singer and more. The event is free, but a ticket is suggested.
Cuban Sandwich Smackdown
Foodies may enjoy this free competition for the best Cuban sandwich in Miami this Saturday at the home of the reigning champions, Sergio’s restaurant in the Doral. The winner of the competition goes to compete in Tampa – and they better bring home the gold. We Miamians are proud of our Cuban cuisine. It goes without saying that this event, like most Cuban celebrations, also will have live music and impromptu dancing.
Up in Broward County’s Weston, the free World Fest will be celebrating international food, entertainment and art from various nations. It features dancers, singers and musicians performing a variety of music.
