Spike the pool
If the South Beach Food & Wine Festival is out of your price range even with these discounts, then head over to The Hall hotel on Miami Beach for this free pool party hosted by Chef Spike Mendelsohn on Friday. Some 12 local and national chefs will compete in pool games, such as raft relay races, while the audience watches and cheers poolside, all the while sipping on cocktails and lunching on bite-sized food.
Police & Fire Pig Cook Off
That age-old rivalry between cops and firefighters comes head-to-head at this Pig Cook Off where the victor gets serious bragging rights. But the real winner will be a 2-year-old boy fighting leukemia because proceeds will benefit his charity. And after you pig out, stay for the concert featuring local Ricky Valido’s Hialeah Hillbillies. It all happens Sunday in Hialeah Park Racing & Casino and it is free admission and free parking.
It isn’t often that one hears bluegrass music in South Florida so take advantage of the free admission to the 38th Annual Everglades Bluegrass Festival, which runs in North Miami Beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Yes, that’s 38 years of bluegrass so these folks know how to jam on their guitars. Parking is $7.
This free inaugural event celebrates Japanese culture with a cosplay contest and fashion show, Taiko drumming by Fushu Daiko, martial arts demonstrations, Japanese craft-making and more. The celebration runs Saturday and Sunday at Florida International University in Southwest Miami-Dade.
Free concerts galore
There are a number of free concerts this weekend all over Miami-Dade, ranging from classic rock and roll band Viva on Friday night near the airport to Afro-Cuban funk band PALO! on Saturday night in Hialeah to the classical pianist Kate Liu on Sunday afternoon in Coral Gables to eclectic Jewish music by Second Avenue Jewish Chorale and the Civic Chorale of Greater Miami on Sunday afternoon in Kendall.
Broward has its share of free events this weekend, too. Consider the Orange Blossom Festival in Davie, the Butterfly Festival in Coconut Creek, Tunes & Trucks in Sunrise, and 50s and 60s music in Tamarac.
