This new steakhouse in Bal Harbour channels Hollywood glamour
A glam new steakhouse has opened in the former space of its sister restaurant in Bal Harbour.
Stephen Starr of Starr Restaurants is opening Slim’s, a luxurious new steakhouse at Bal Harbour Shops in the former first-floor space of the Japanese restaurant Makoto, also a part of the Starr Restaurants empire. Makoto left the first-floor space in 2022 and moved up to the third floor. Aba Mediterranean restaurant opened there in 2023, but closed in 2025.
Now, Slim’s has taken over the spot. Designed by the New York-based Gachot design studio, the space features 183 seats in indoor and outdoor dining areas and homages to the golden age of movies with leather banquettes and colorful, Art Deco-inspired murals by Christoph Niemann, known for his covers of The New Yorker and New York Times Magazine.
Starr, whose hospitality group also owned the French restaurant Le Zoo, which after 10 years closed at the shops in 2025, said that opening in Makoto’s first home “felt right.”
“Bal Harbour has always been a special place — glamorous, intentional and effortlessly chic,” he said. “I wanted to create an intentional space that feels transportive but still welcoming, where locals and visitors can come together to experience delicious food, great drinks and an atmosphere that feels special.”
Steak is at the forefront of the menu with many different cuts and traditional steakhouse experiences like a raw bar for oysters and a caviar experience. The Starr Restaurants famous cheesesteak is there, too, made from wagyu, black truffle, foie gras, fried onions and Cooper Sharp cheese on a sesame roll.
In addition to the meat entrees, diners can order pigs in a blanket, King crab rolls and crab-stuffed avocado, in addition to seafood specialties like wild Dover sole, lobster tails and Chilean sea bass.
In keeping with the Golden Age vibe, martinis are a big part of the cocktail program, which offers a full martini menu (and plenty of other drinks if martinis aren’t your thing.
