Popular Wynwood food market is closing: ‘The day has come’
Hold up.
Just a month after reopening for the fall and winter season, Smorgasburg open-air food market in Wynwood announced it’s shutting down for good.
Well, not for good. The note on Instagram says the concept will reopen in a different location at a later date.
So why the sudden closure? You can thank Miami’s seemingly never-ending quest to morph into an American Dubai. A residential project is coming to the 50,000 square foot lot that Smorgasburg has called home since March 2022.
“At last the day has come when we have to say our goodbyes to our Wynwood home,” read the market’s Instagram post earlier this week. “Over 3.5 years. 2 million plus guests. Hundreds of vendors. Thousands of dishes. Innumerable moments of joy.”
The message goes on to explain how much work went into the massive undertaking of transforming the “desolate space with overgrown weeds” into a beloved weekend destination for local foodies. “Countless hours cooking, setting up, dealing with the rain (and humidity), U-Hauls, broken equipment, the city of Miami (bless their hearts), breaking down, low sales, great sales. A rollercoaster.”
Zero regrets, though.
“Ultimately, the reason it means so much is because at the end of all that work, there was a chance to feed and welcome all of you,” the post says.
Owner Gastno Becherano — who opened the first Smorgasburg in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg in 2011, and another in L.A. five years later — has referred to his baby as “Disneyland for food” that’s “a launchpad for small businesses.”
Vendors in the 305 included an eclectic mix of faves like The Lazy Oyster, La Birrieria Tijuana, Korean Kitchen, La Picaña Grill, Flamingo Bubble Waffles, Ikigai Sushi, Platano Power and Primoo Boba.
Before everything gets packed up, you can still attend the UbeFest event on Nov. 29 and 30, celebrating all things ube, a purple yam from the Philippines that’s a cousin of the sweet potato.
The market’s last day of operations is Dec. 7.
