Live rat and live roaches spotted at Miami area sports bar by state inspector

Surprise, surprise, surprise for the people and the vermin during Friday’s state inspection of a West Miami-Dade sports bar and restaurant.

The staff at New Wave Billiards & Sports Bar, 1403 SW 107th Ave., were surprised by the inspection because they didn’t check the glue traps around the kitchen. The glue traps sat there, and the inspector saw a live rat, who was surprised by the glue trap underfoot. There were also five live roaches, likely stunned by the glue trap under them.

All of that got packed into just one of the seven violations the inspector found at New Wave, in the University Park Center North strip mall, across Southwest 107th Avenue from FIU’s Modesto A. “Mitch” Maidique campus.

There was also an “accumulation of black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine/bin” near the food prep area.

Cove molding was missing behind the reach-in cooler near the roach-packed glue trap.

In that area were three roaches that hadn’t been caught on the glue trap. Two other roaches “crawled on the floor behind the dishwasher.”

That dishwasher wasn’t dispensing any sanitizer on the dishes or utensils.

New Wave reopened after passing re-inspection on Saturday.
